History of the Tamborine Mountain Show Society
The Tamborine Mountain Show Society is at the heart of community life on the Mountain, proudly celebrating almost 100 years of local tradition, rural heritage, and community spirit.
Our story begins on the fertile plateau of Tamborine Mountain, where the Wangerriburra people lived for thousands of years before European settlement in the 1870s. The name “Tamborine” is believed to come from “Jambreen,” meaning wild lime trees. In the early 20th century, as farming and timber shaped the region, the Show Society was formed to promote agricultural excellence and bring the community together.
The very first Tamborine Mountain Show was held in 1929, at the Main Western Road Showgrounds, featuring dairy, citrus, and later, avocados. What began as a modest gathering soon became a highlight of the year, with livestock displays, produce competitions, and family fun drawing crowds from far and wide. Volunteers have always been at the heart of the Society, helping to preserve the Showgrounds and keep the tradition alive.
Today, the annual Tamborine Mountain Show has grown into a vibrant festival, attracting thousands of visitors. Each year brings new themes and entertainment, from parades and competitions to artisan exhibits, live performances, and much-loved contests like the fruit cake competition. These events not only showcase the best of the Mountain but also create lasting memories for families and visitors alike.
The Tamborine Mountain Country Markets are another jewel of the Society, now one of the largest and most loved markets in the region. With more than 150 stalls, they offer everything from fresh produce and plants to handmade crafts, vintage treasures, fashion, and an ever-growing range of food vendors that cater to all tastes.
Despite challenges such as severe weather and the impacts of COVID-19, the Show Society has remained strong and resilient. By working alongside local groups, we continue to honour our rural traditions, support local talent, and contribute to the region’s tourism and economy.
The Showgrounds remain a historic and welcoming venue, home to diverse events that celebrate our culture and community. As we look to the future, the Tamborine Mountain Show Society is proud to carry forward a legacy of connection, celebration, and community pride.
